Suarez ban: how Liverpool’s flawed genius impacts on Sunderland AFC

Malcolm Dawson writes….I have no sympathy for Luis Suarez. A serial biter deserves all he gets.

Even as he withdrew his teeth he fell to the ground hoping to fool the referee into believing he was the one sinned against. That’s the sort of behaviour you hope a four-year-old is about to grow out of.

I might even argue that a four-month ban is eight months too short. There is no doubt his stupidity and childish behaviour will cost Liverpool dear in the coming season. Not only will he miss more than 25 per cent of their League campaign but his absence in European ties will be crucial.

But I’m not bothered about Liverpool. What I am bothered about is that his absence from the Liverpool teamsheet can only mean that Brendan Rodgers and the Liverpool owners will be less inclined to listen to any offer that SAFC might be making for Fabio Borini.

The latest media speculation is that we have offered £8 million for the Italian and there was no guarantee that Borini would be brought back anyway, but whatever chance there was has surely been lessened by the petulance of Suarez.

The fact that Suarez was rolling about feigning injury has largely been forgotten about in the wake of the furore surrounding the biting. As you rightly say his cheating just adds to the disgust and contempt that so many people are feeling.

The punishment he has had doled out to him seems very lenient to me. I wonder what they will do when he bites someone for the fourth time.

It was good to read an article about Suarez which wasn’t prefaced about how good a player he is. Talent is considerably outshone by ignominy for me.

Unless, of course, they decide to replace Suarez with a ‘big’ signing, in which case Liverpool may need to sell first to raise funds. After all, they can’t sell Suarez and use those funds to replace him. It all depends on whether Rodgers sees Borini as being able to fill that gap and, as much as I like Borini, I would suggest he’s not of that calibre.
We may yet get our man.
