Jake: 'it's a start'

Jake: ‘it’s a start’

A point at Southampton is always a good return. But for the third time in four seasons – the odd one out leaving us a little humiliated – Sunderland lost out on an important win because they could not defend a lead. SAFC were the better side in the first half, recovered from a second half loss of dominance to take the lead through Jermain Defoe’s penalty but could not keep the Saints out for the remaining minutes … Pete Sixsmith will fill in into more detail about his trip down south in due course but this is his instant verdict ..

August 27. Southampton 1 (0) Sunderland 1 (0) Disappointing at the end, as ever here

August 24. EFL Cup 2nd Round: Sunderland 1 (0) Shrewsbury Town 0 (0) Poor game settled by an excellent goal

August 21: Sunderland 1 (0) Middlesbrough 2 (2) Another season of struggle on the cards

August 13: Man City (1) 2 Sunderland (0) 1 Held them well but tired legs told

Really pity. Pickford had played really well before the error.

Centre back pairing were immense today and I was impressed with Manquillo.

Cannot see why the manager doesn’t play Khazri; perhaps you have to be 6’3″ to get in the team or ex Everton.

Certainly need to beef up central midfield–still not convinced by Rodwell.

That said, most encouraging; a good solid performance.

He probably thinks Gooch is needed to beef up the midfield in the absence of Catts and Kirch. When they are fit Khazri will be more in line for a starting place. It’s a question of balance.

Solid performance starting to see the makings of a good team. Once all the squad are fit there will be competition for places and that will keep everybody on their toes. We need to hold on to what we have and bring in quality. Forward and upward.
