Jake: 'Sixer does it in seven words, no more, no less - unless he miscounts'

Jake: ‘Sixer does it in seven words, no more, no less – unless he miscounts’

This is the place where, game after game and ahead of his more considered view, Pete Sixsmith sums up the play in just seven words. Today took him to Turf Moor; at half time he probably wished he’d gone to see Durham win the one-day final Lords, announcing to the world: ‘Seen more threat at a pacifist meeting.’ Maybe he hoped for the rest of the afternoon off. The second had more thrills, with the woodwork seeing action at both ends, but Sunderland remained unconvincing enough for Sixer to see the event as a great advertisement for the alternative attractions of cricket or Rugby League …

    Terrible.

Need to trade in 4 alleged goal scorers for a single proven one in January. In the meantime play Whatmore, Mavrias or even football.

Wickham had a reasonable game in some respects, but needs much better service if to be a lone striker.

      • Plan B September 21, 2014 at 9:12 am #

It’s a little of both for me. He needs service, but he needs to start bringing others into play too. Poyet’s big challenge is accomplishing this.

There’s no real sign we’re improving going forward though. For the last 13 months we’ve got to 25 yards from goal, and someone has a shot. We rarely create any chances whatsoever.

Sixer might be able to get these reports down to only 6 letters if this performance is anything to go by.

I suggest he could start with “garbage.”

    • salutsunderland September 20, 2014 at 8:55 pm #

He’d need to get the spelling wrong to keep it to six letters, Jeremy. Garbaj would work

  4. William C September 20, 2014 at 6:53 pm #

We keep hearing about Poyet’s playing ” philosophy “. Can anyone enlighten me as to what it is?

  5. KenG September 20, 2014 at 7:19 pm #

A very poor game. Any goal would have been an insult to the fare on offer. Support excellent again.

  6. Roddy September 20, 2014 at 7:33 pm #

And so begins the annual relegation battle.

  7. malcolm September 20, 2014 at 8:38 pm #

My heart sank when I saw the bench. Altidore and Graham ahead of Fletcher? Bridcutt and Buckley but no Alvarez.

Wickham came good at the end of last season no argument, but a fit Fletcher is a proven goalscorer – CW is not. Something’s not right in my opinion.

    • malcolm September 20, 2014 at 8:40 pm #

But then why would I think it should be? 50 years a Sunderland supporter doesn’t encourage an optimistic outlook.

      • salutsunderland September 20, 2014 at 9:12 pm #

There must be something going on re Fletch. Last week Barnes/Benno said he;d been left out for tactical reasons. That was after his killer pass for Scotland vs Germany, world champions, which wd have boosted his confidence no end. What was it today?

  8. Jeremy September 20, 2014 at 11:59 pm #

Garbaj, Salut. Quite. I meant 7 (honest guv!).

William. the playing philosophy is quite simple. Go away and defend and hope for a counter attack with which we don’t have the players to deliver.

It’s all Borini’s fault btw, for not wanting to come and play for a side like this.

He was no better than garbaj either today.

  9. Plan B September 21, 2014 at 9:13 am #

One positive, Rodwell had his brightest game, gonna be great for us this lad.

  10. Neil September 21, 2014 at 9:37 am #

Just a thought…last time we were at Burnley we lost 3-1. We then won 3-0 at the return fixture. Burnley have proven to be obdurate. It’s a useful away point. We do need a win

  11. Jeremy September 21, 2014 at 1:09 pm #

We’ve played two newly promoted teams, failed to score in either game and got 1 point out of 6. It’s familiar territory.
