Jake: ‘forget the hangovers – roar the Lads to victory’ at the seaside’

New Year’s day is part of a great English football tradition. Games are played on January 1 just as they take place on Boxing Day, so much better than the wimpish French trêve (it also means truce but here denotes a widwinter sporting break).

And Sunderland, accompanied by 7-8,000 supporters, are at Blackpool. A special Who are You?, to be published on Sunday afternoon, will combine answers from the Lancashire club’s mascot, the Bloomfield Bear, and another look at the smashing interview gven to us a few years ago by the Blackpool and BBC legend Jimmy Armfield, who died in January 2018.

We need to recover from the disappointment of a lame draw at home to Shrewsbury.

Here is another prize Guess the Score. Be first to be right, have a UK postal address and – subject to Monsieur Salut’s final decision – you will receive the customary mug. Blackpool fans are, of course, invited to enter and a winner from that source would receive a suitable alternative.

Five names of your choice appear on the mug

Ha’way the Lads and happy new year to all our readers.

Allowing for us conceding goals too freely of late, it will be 4-3 to The Lads.

Blackpool 1 – 4 Sunderland, we are better away from home as sides have to come at us, but we are still giving away cheap goals and then stuck with having to break down a stubborn time wasting 11 man defence.

My recent predictions of 3-2 in the last two games have come to nothing so this time I’m going for 2-3.

    3 – 1 to the lads.

    2-1 Sunderland

Sunderland will put in a towering performance in the vicinity of the Pleasure Beach. It may be a rollercoaster ride but the score will be a Big One. I sincerely hope Blackpool is well stocked up on beer and the local chippies have ordered extra supplies of fish. Blackpool will be battered fower nowt.

Wurlitzer one for the Maja, two for Maguire, three for McGeady and Lee Catts four, as Sun’land step up a gear or two. ‘Pool can do what they want but they won’t stop another two.

With all the ball room they give us they’ll be no match for their piers! I’ll get me coat.

      6-0 to The Lads

I’m feeling concerned about this fixture, but I can’t bet against my team so I’ll go for a 0-2 win.

Bravo, Bill. You won’t have room for yet another mug!

2-2 draw. I still have bad memories of the 3-2 defeat in the 70’s , and the Micky Walsh belter

The eternal optimist says for all my comments on Maja the other day we have others out on loan scoring for fun albeit in a lower league such as Nelson who’s confidence must be sky high at the minute why not bring him back and give him a run if it had not been for early season injury then he may well have been a regular by now.!!! 5 nowt to the lads and a very Happy start to the New Year
